Chapter 10
I disobeyed Cleggâs orders and stopped when I got to the main road. My reason was due to the temperature hitting triple digits, and my belief that not even a camel could survive riding in the trunk of a car under those conditions.
âThank you,â she said, getting out of the trunk. She was dripping with sweat, but otherwise, okay.
âDid you kill your husband?â I blurted.
She gave a bewildered look and then shook her head. âI told you my husband diedââ
âNot Jean-Paul,â I interrupted. âCharlie. Did you kill Charlie Wu?â
âCharlieâs dead?â she said, covering her mouth. âHow? When?â
âLast night.â
Her face went white, and I thought for a moment she was going to collapse. âI canât believeâ¦no. I swear I didnât. I didnât killâ¦Charlieâs dead? Whatâs going on?â she yelled.
Iâm not an expert on reading womenâdonât know any man who isâbut I was sure Michelle Wu wasnât lying. I was also sure she was scared to death.
âCome on,â I said. âWe need to get out of here.â
Neither one of us spoke for the rest of the way into town. When we arrived at The Jam Jar, I was expecting her to leap from the car and run inside. She didnât. Instead, she seemed hesitant to get out.
âItâs okay,â I said, offering a reassuring smile. âHeâs inside.â
She looked at me, nodded, and then opened the door.
Betsy and Luther were behind the bar. I didnât see Jean-Claude right off but soon found him sitting at a booth in the back of the club. He was examining some charts Eighty-Eight Eddie must have given him to look over and was so engrossed, he didnât notice us come in.
âHey, J.C.,â I said. âArenât you going to say hello?â
He looked up.
âMother!â he yelled, leaping out of the booth and running into her arms.
âJean-Claude,â she cried out, embracing the boy, and burying her face in his neck, âIâm so sorry, Jean-Claude,â she whispered. âIâm so sorry.â
I went over to the bar. Luther and Betsy were smiling.
âThatâs mighty good, Trip,â Luther said. âIs it over?â
âNot even close,â I replied, setting the blue folder on the bar.
âWhatâs that? Whereâs Agent Clegg?â Betsy asked.
I just shook my head and reached for the phone. I dialed the number. This time, there was no ring, only a click.
âOperator,â a womanâs voice said.
âUhâ¦who?â
âThis is the operator. Youâve dialed a number no longer in service.â
âIâm sorry, I must have dialed the wrong number. Sorry.â
I hung up and dialed again.
âOperator,â another womanâs voice said.
âIs this 555-0020?â
âIâm sorry, sir. This number is no longer in service.â
âThank you.â
I hung up the phone.
âTrouble?â Luther asked.
âThe number to Cleggâs men has been disconnected.â
I looked over at Jean-Claude and Michelle. They were still in each otherâs arms. âLuther, could you stash this?â I asked, nodding down to the dossier laying on the bar.
âIâll put it in my office.â
âCould you put it in the stock room, maybe in one of the boxes where you keep your old copies of Down Beat? Sorry, Bets.â
âConsider it done,â he replied. âWhat is it?â
âIâm not completely sure, but Clegg told me to take good care of it.
